It is customary for persons to think the UTech Knight’s domination of every championship held annually would finally come to crash. However, the UTech Knights Rugby Team would rubbish the doubt as they emerged victors in the finals of the Inter-Collegiate Rugby competition, played at Alpha Boys, by beating the Mico Crocs. The Knights trained long and hard for this title and was rightfully crowned champions in the end. It was not handed to them easily though because even though the score may reflect otherwise, the Knights had to tackle vigorously as the Crocs put up a great challenge.
The star-studded Knights team, coached by Ricardo Brammwell, dominated the first half as they scored in the first three tries against the opposition. In the second half however, the Crocs team fought hard and forced the UTech players to make mistakes which allowed Mico to finally get a breakthrough. The fairytale was to be in the Knight’s favour as they quickly recovered and managed to score back to back penalties. The Knights had to then defend for almost 15 minutes as the Crocs team would not give up, as they relentlessly attacked the champion’s defense, forcing them to defend like a colony of ants protecting their nest. The high intensity game eventually ended 26-4 with Jermaine Smith, a 3 rd year law student, putting in the man of the match performance.
The scorers from the UTech Knights team include: Matthew McFarlane-8, Kevin Ferguson-4, Ashdane Beckford-4, Johnnoy Rattery-8 and Marvin Thompson- 2. While Anotnio Baker managed to score the only 4 points for Mico.
