It is with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of the family from the University Technology, Jamaica Western Campus. As the western campus representative, it is my solemn responsibility to facilitate your overall development by protecting your rights during my tenure. Given this, any support or advice that you may need pertaining to your academic, social, cultural and spiritual development at the western campus, I will be here to assist you.

The Western Campus is located in the city of Montego Bay, St. James and has a population of approximately 1050 students. The campus currently houses the College of Health Science, School of Business Administration, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Science and Sport and the School of Computing and Information Technology. The development of the western campus as a significant arm of the Universitys network is critical and as such it is of paramount importance that the Students’ Union supports and initiates programmes that will not only achieve that goal, but also benefit the students of Western Jamaica.

This development of which I speak of must be one that will allow the institution to be the place of choice for prospective students. This will only be achieved through dedicated representation by student leaders who will serve the students of this noble institution. As we embark upon a new academic year, I implore every student of the university to be a part of the student union by joining committees and actively participating in the various activities to be hosted.

This year, your Students’ Union Council will be targeting your creativity, academics, cultural and social well being. Through our school spirit, we will create a unique university lifestyle which will be extended to all, as such, when you leave here, you will be proud to say “I attended the University of Technology, Western Campus”.

We promise to provide quality service through ultimate representation as we look forward to serving you. The vision has been set for the upcoming academic year and with this vision comes opportunities which we will embark upon to make your tenure fulfilled, productive and one to remember. Favorite quote:  Accept yourself, It will inspire others to do the same for themselves.

Motto: Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

Every day, a new opportunity to decide where your next step will go is given to you. Your future will be determined by the accumulation of these daily decisions. You control your steps and therefore your destiny, so choose wisely, making a great faculty even greater. Welcome to a world of challenges; a world where success will be the result of hard work, sweat and tears. A world where anything is possible and your dreams will not be limited by any compromising factor.

My returning students, I pray that you are even more enthused and prepared to continue working assiduously for the betterment of our outstanding faculty. Rest assured, it will not be easy, but as the great Saint Francis of Assisi once said, “Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

New students, you could not have made a better decision. You will now be surrounded by positive, inspirational people, enclosed in a warm and friendly environment. Your futures are engraved in your hands. Think wisely and act responsibly. My job is to ensure that everyone will be as efficient and productive as they can be. I have a special zeal towards my faculty; pink and aqua-marine travel through every crevice of my body. With your help, we will have not only a good time together, but a very beneficial experience. My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take credit. He told me to try and be in the first group, and I now urge you to reserve your spot and get ready to work. Let’s do this, TOGETHER! smiley

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning students of the University of Technology for the academic year 2012/2013. It is my esteemed pleasure to serve in the capacity of School of engineering representative, an honour bestowed that is accepted with the utmost humility and soberness, with the aim of providing a high quality of service- “Ultimately”.

However, the greater privilege is shared by us all and that is to be enrolled in one of the finest institutions in the region and arguably the world. Let me hasten to say that UTech is not a destination; it is just a part of your journey. By the end of your tenure, I guarantee, that you will discover as much new knowledge of your chosen discipline as you will of yourself. I would like to call this journey “the making of you”.   Richard Monckton Milnes once said “Virtue lies in the struggle, not in the prize”

It is indeed a great pleasure to be serving as Part-Time Representative for this academic year.  The part-time students of this University are limited in their ability to achieve their fullest potential due to various issues.  These issues I will address through relentless work and dedication.

Regardless of the different faculties and the different concerns, we are one body, one team. At the end of it all, we will say we did it ourselves.

To the returning students, I trust that you will continue on the path of success towards the completion of your graduation requirements.

New students, you have made the right choice, welcome to a new world of opportunity, the ball is now in your court, you need to now make that goal.

Welcome to all new and returning FOSS FLAMING PHEONIX!

It was Abraham Lincoln that once said; nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. With that fundamental principle that there in a science and sports faculty, our destiny is not written for us, but written by us. That's who we are, and that's the faculty we need to be right now. It will take a new direction. It will take new leadership in the faculty of science and sport, as a man with sound Christian values I will stand for Godly principles, I will stand for what I believe and not lose my integrity by the problems that will present themselves.

I sincerely hope that the academic year 2012/2013 will be a fulfilling and productive one, where the social, academic and sporting needs of our students can be met. With the help of my predecessor, my fellow council members and you my FOSS family I will fill that gap of high expectations of our students. I am looking forward to a productive year that will bring much success as I am here to serve and to represent. “Think Change; Leadership at its best”, let this be the theme of our hearts as we journey through what is expected to be a challenging year. United we stand, divided we fall.

Each day we creatively extend the script that will define what we have done and what we will do, with those days when we were energized, confident and motivated, as well as those when we were lost and dreams seem so unattainable. How we capitalize on these experiences will dictate our growth as individuals, so walk with the right attitude; a positive attitude, even  smile in the face of  storms.

Why?

Why let your struggles define you?

Why let the big picture overwhelm you?

Why not use those constraints to push you harder and build that competitive edge?

Why not learn from those struggles, treating them like the bridges that they are and not the walls we assume them to be?

Our very emotions make us susceptible to care, so never feel that you are alone as there is always someone else; someone else who could use your help, someone else who wouldn’t mind helping you and always someone else who can totally relate. Take the risk to share and likewise to care as we walk with the knowledge that we are never alone.

My fellow students, I welcome you to the University of Technology Jamaica. Your time spent at the Caribbean School of Architecture will be challenging and eventful, but keep your focus and put your best forward at all times and get it done. I look forward to hearing from and working with you.

It is with esteemed pleasure that I serve as your Student Representative for the academic year 2012/2013 and as the great Alfred Einstein said, “Try not to be a man of success but a man of value”.  A warm welcome to all new and returning students of the School of Business Administration and Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership. I urge you to be optimistic and innovative as you embark on your journey throughout the academic year. Explore the world around you and make the best of it. However don’t get distracted from the real reason you are here.

To my new students; personal responsibility is a key factor in being successful during your time here. You will be faced with adversities, but never give up! The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

For returning students, keep persevering. Continue on your desired paths to independence. In the wise words of Aristotle; “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit.”

As Henry Ford stated, “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.” As a team with each other’s interest at heart we can and will reap success. Let us change the negatives, continue building on the positives while creating and sustaining good relationships with each other. We are the future leaders of our nation; it’s our responsibility to be the best we can.
